Bristol-based Photographer David Jeffery-Hughes

About me…

I’m David Jeffery-Hughes, born and raised in Bedminster, Bristol. I’ve been fascinated by photography from a young age, starting at 13 when I began documenting the streets, people, and architecture of my hometown. I was particularly inspired by local photographer Reece Windstone’s collection of historical images of Bristol, and the fast-paced, ever-changing life of Bedminster gave me a drive to capture the city as I experienced it.

Since 2016, I’ve been fortunate to photograph events at some of the UK’s leading venues, in Bristol and London including Thekla, Bristol Beacon, Electric Bristol, O2 Academy Brixton, Oslo Hackney, The Garage Islington, and much of West London. After four years of event photography, I expanded my practice by completing my MA in Photography in 2021, which allowed me to explore new creative directions.

In 2020, I launched two personal projects exploring youth, politics, and current affairs. It’s Later Than You Think reflects my passion for event photography, while You’ll Never Leave captures a more personal story from my own life. Both are available as photo books via Lulu Bookstore.

In 2024, I spent four months researching, interviewing, and designing a book documenting the 40-year history of Thekla, a music venue on a retired German cargo ship that’s been a cornerstone of Bristol’s music scene since 1984. The book includes contributions from Bristol legends and photos by renowned photographer Beezer, and it remains one of my proudest projects. Copies are available in the Thekla merchandise store.

In 2025, I launched Breakthrough Bristol, a project supporting emerging artists with professional live media packages and performance opportunities. For a flat rate, I secure a venue, help promote the show, and capture the set with professional photos, a 30-second highlight reel, and a feature in Breakthrough Bristol Magazine. I’m excited to grow and expand this project throughout 2026.
